#Twitterban: Buhari govt losing N2.18bn daily
As Nigeria’s Twitter ban enters day three, the Federal Government is losing about N2.18 billion naira daily, a report by NetBlocks, a data-driven online service, has revealed.
WUZUPNIGERIA reported that the ban was announced by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Friday, June 4 and the suspension became effective from Saturday, June 5.
This means that Nigeria would have lost around N6.54bn by the end of Monday, June 6, going by NetBlocks’ daily estimation.
Interestingly, using indicators from the World Bank, ITU, Eurostat and US. Census, Nigeria is the second country with the highest unemployment rate globally according to Bloomberg.
According to Statista’s report published Mar 19, 2021, the unemployment rate in Nigeria is estimated to reach 32.5 per cent in 2021 and the figure is projected to increase by 2022.
Recall that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on June expressed worry over the growing level of unemployment relating to fresh graduates in the country.
Speaking during a virtual meeting organised by Federal Government and United Nations Development Programme, he said, “Unemployment is a great problem, especially youth unemployment. Two million young people come to the job market every year.”
This is just as The National Bureau of Statistics on March 15 revealed that the unemployment rate in Nigeria increased to 33.3% from 27.1% in the second quarter of 2020.
Regardless of the condemnation from Nigerians and the international organisations including the United Nations, United States, United Kingdom, and Sweden amongst others, the Nigerian Government has justified the suspension by claiming that the decision was not retaliation to the president’s deleted tweet alone.
A statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu claimed that Twitter was suspended because of misinformation and the spread of fake news on social media among other factors.
