Twitter reacts as Kano university SUG leader steps out with bodyguards, convoy [Video]
A video of a supposed Students’ Union leader with a retinue of ‘security details’ and a waiting convoy of vehicles has emerged on social media, sparking a series of reactions.
The yet-to-be-identified student is said to be the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council of Kano University of Science and Technology.
The SRC is the legislative arm of the Students’ Union Government in tertiary institutions.
A Twitter user, Ogundeyi Oluwatosin shared the video via his handle @hogundeyi1.
He captioned:
“Sometimes I am fascinated by the north and its political consciousness. Here is a video of the Kano university of science and technology student representative council; please compare to any Student union of any university in the south.”
In the viral footage, the SRC leader and others believed to be principal officers of the SRC could be seen in their agbada attire walking out of the SRC building with some young men standing as their bodyguards, ushering them to a waiting coaster bus.
Some of the ‘bodyguards’ were seen dressed in black suits like DSS operatives, while others wore vests with the inscription “SRC intelligence”.
The SRC leader himself was seen waving at a waiting crowd of students who had gathered around the SRC building as he and his entourage made their way into the convoy.
Some social media users, however, found the scene disturbing and described the students’ union leader as ‘power-drunk’.
@JMObiefuna wrote:
This isn’t political awareness as some would want to assume. This is the typical tendency of an average power drunken African.
The fact it happened in an institution shows this isn’t about lack of education but self-inflected delusions of grandeur.

@Stkeypoint tweeted:
SRC intelligence; crassest ever! Let me give a succinct. This is absolutely preposterous and uncalled for. This grandiosity has power drunkenness signature, consdescending classism been encouraged. In an institution where a student still receiving lectures is privileged to serve!

Another user tweeted:
How can I be proud of this? A supposed Union leader that mistakes itself to be a king, this is the bane of the political class. He should be acting more like Sowore and not like an emperor. I smell corruption

However, in the face of the backlashes the video has generated on social media, a Twitter user has said the video was filmed during a cultural week celebration at the university last week.
@Kamaalsarki tweeted.
it was for cultural week celebration, he portrayed himself as president, other people portrayed themselves as kings, district heads and governors, it was for fun! it happened last week at the university

They have bodyguards? Amazing. One can tell they’re already laying the foundations for bigger political positions. Would almost be impossible for them not to get these positions.

Political consciousness?
Imagine working hard to send your child to school to learn, only for him to assume the role of a pretend bodyguard for his fellow students in the representative council.

Fellow Nigerians,
This is where the problem is from!
Ruler orientation instead of service orientation!

This is nonsense and should not be encouraged.
This is not the kind of future leaders we are talking about.
These ones will be worse than the present and past leaders.— Baby girl ? (@i_njure) 22 December 2019
