In a dramatic turn of events, the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has nullified the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue a certificate of return to his All Progressives Congress rival, Nasir Gawuna.

Gawuna had earlier congratulated Yusuf on his victory but the APC proceeded to court to challenge the results of the election, alleging irregularities.

The three-man tribunal, led by Justice Ibrahim Na’abba, gave the ruling on Wednesday after upholding the petition filed by the APC and Gawuna.

The tribunal deducted 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total as invalid votes, stating that the ballot papers were not stamped or signed.

The tribunal deducted 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total, declaring them invalid on the grounds that the ballot papers were not stamped or signed.

This reduced Yusuf’s total votes to 853,939, while Gawuna’s total votes remained at 901,227.
