President Bola Tinubu has appointed Senate President Godswill Akpabio as Deputy Director General, South I, of the All Progressives Congress 2027 Presidential Campaign Council as the governing party steps up preparations for the President’s re-election bid.
The 223-member council is expected to spearhead Tinubu’s campaign, with responsibilities ranging from political mobilisation and engagement with key stakeholders to the organisation, planning and coordination of campaign activities nationwide. The Punch reported the development.
Tinubu’s pursuit of another term comes against a challenging political backdrop, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi emerging as major challengers. Both opposition figures have sought to capitalise on public discontent over economic difficulties and insecurity, maintaining that almost 12 years of APC governance have left the country poorer, more indebted and no more secure than it was when the party came to power under former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Cheta Nwanze, a partner at Nigeria-based risk advisory firm SBM Intelligence, said, according to Reuters: “The APC’s tenure from 2015 to 2026 makes for unhappy reading and Tinubu’s reforms have particularly brought severe pain. Our voter tracker shows nearly 80% of Nigerians say the country is headed in the wrong direction with 45% citing economic hardship and insecurity as their top concern.”
