Three brothers from the same mother were killed in suspected cult-related attacks in Awka, Anambra State.

One of the brothers, Nonso, was killed on Saturday in broad daylight near Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.

His death follows the earlier killings of his younger brother, Buchi, three months ago, and their eldest brother in another attack, leaving their mother without any children.

A family source shared that Nonso’s death is believed to be linked to Buchi’s murder around the Mac Don Eatery area. “It’s unimaginable. She’s lost her only three children within months,” said the family friend, describing the mother’s heartbreak.

This latest incident adds to the toll of cult violence that has claimed over twenty lives in Awka in recent weeks.

The capital city has long been troubled by cult clashes, with rival groups locked in deadly battles, bringing fear and loss to many families. Recent attacks also evoke painful memories of previous massacres in the Nibo and Ifite communities.

Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned the latest killings, promising a thorough investigation. “We are committed to tracking down those responsible and ensuring they face justice,” he said, emphasizing the command’s focus on ending cult violence in the state.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo also addressed the situation, urging calm among residents. He promised tighter security in Awka, saying, “Our administration is fully committed to restoring peace and protecting the lives of all citizens.”
