Team Brazil claimed victory at the E1 Lagos Grand Prix on Sunday, marking their first win in the all-electric powerboat racing series.
Powered by their strong pole position from Saturday’s qualifying round, pilot Timmy Hansen led Team Brazil through the group stages, race-off, and final to secure the top spot.
They finished ahead of Team Blue Rising, who came second, while Team Drogba took third place.
There was no podium spot for Team Rafa and Team Brady, who have been battling for the top position in the championship standings ahead of the Lagos round.
The win earned Team Brazil 38 points, bringing their total to 89 points. Despite the victory, they remain behind the championship leaders as the season heads to its final race in Miami next month.
The E1 World Championship, often called the “Formula One of the seas,” is the world’s first all-electric powerboat series. It combines speed, technology, and environmental sustainability to promote cleaner marine transport.
The Lagos event made history as the first E1 race ever held in Africa.
E1 founder and Chief Executive Officer, Rodi Basso, praised the Lagos round as a landmark moment for motorsport on the continent.
“The warm welcome in Lagos has been incredible. The passion of Nigerians made this historic E1 Lagos GP possible,” he said. “Our ambition is to build a motorsport legacy in Africa. This weekend’s race is just the beginning.”
The E1 Championship was co-founded by Alejandro Agag, the creator of Formula E and Extreme E, alongside former Formula One engineer Rodi Basso.
The Lagos race, presented by FirstBank, drew thousands of fans to the Marina waterfront, where excitement filled the air as teams from across the world competed on the Lagos Lagoon.
Football legend Didier Drogba, whose Team Drogba Global Africa participated in the event, attended with his partner, Gabrielle Lemaire, both credited for helping bring the E1 series to Africa.
The E1 Lagos Grand Prix served as the penultimate round of the season, setting up a dramatic finish in Miami next month.
