The Taraba Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce has arrested two suspected illegal miners during a raid on a gold mining site in Mayo Kam. This took place in Gantu village, Bali Local Government Area.

According to Vanguard, the taskforce chairman, Emmanuel Jamu, disclosed the arrests to journalists in Jalingo on Monday. He said weeks of intelligence gathering led operatives to the remote location.

Jamu said security personnel travelled through difficult terrain to reach the site and disrupt the suspected Taraba illegal mining operation.

He explained that several miners fled into nearby forests before the operatives arrived. However, security personnel caught two suspects while they attempted to escape.

The taskforce also recovered pumping machines, digging tools, generators and mineral-processing materials allegedly used at the mining site.

Jamu said the operation formed part of the state government’s campaign against unauthorised mineral extraction. Moreover, it addresses the security threats associated with unregulated mining activities.

“We want to send a clear message. Whether they are there or not, we will keep trying. They can run today, but they cannot run forever. They will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

The chairman appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to provide credible information about illegal mining sites. He also requested details about suspects operating within their communities.

He said such cooperation would help the taskforce locate other miners who fled during the operation. In addition, it would prevent unauthorised activities from returning to affected areas.

Jamu confirmed that authorities had placed the two suspects in custody while investigations continued.

He added that the taskforce would extend its operations to other locations identified as high-risk areas for illegal mining. These will be across Taraba State.

The state government suspended all mining activities on June 19 over security concerns. It later established the Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce to enforce the directive and identify individuals operating outside the law.

The taskforce said it would continue intelligence-led raids until operators comply with the suspension. Furthermore, authorities must restore proper regulation to the state’s mining sector.

The suspects remain presumed innocent until a court proves otherwise.
