Taraba inland water transporters ban night travel
The Association of Inland Water Transporters in Taraba State has banned nighttime boat travel and overloading at all jetties within the state to reduce boat accidents.
The interim state chairman of the association, Alhaji Jidda Mayoreneyo, made this announcement in an interview on Wednesday.
Mayoreneyo said that overloading and nighttime travel are two of the main causes of boat accidents, and that avoiding these practices would help to reduce the number of accidents. He added that nighttime rescue operations are more difficult, meaning more lives are lost when boats sink.
He also disclosed that the National Inland Waterways Association has donated life vests for passengers.
In addition, he said that the National Emergency Management Agency, the National Inland Waterways Agency, and the fire service have conducted water safety education campaigns in three different regions of the state.
