Suspected armed robbers invade Delta Varsity, disrupt academic activities
The Western Delta University, Oghara, had its academic activities disrupted momentarily on Thursday following the invasion of suspected armed robbers into the university campus.
According to the PUNCH, it was reported that the hoodlums gained entry through an unfenced perimeter at the rear of the campus, intending to rob students.
Students, upon sensing danger, quickly raised the alarm and sought safety in nearby areas.
The timely intervention by the law enforcement agents reportedly prevented any casualties or serious disruption to the university’s operations as the invaders were said to have fled in different directions at sighting the security operatives.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
He said, “They (the suspected robbers) entered through the broken fence at the back of the school, but the police responded swiftly and they fled.”
Also commenting, a university student leader, Simeon Okpoko, stated that “the incident underscores ongoing security challenges facing educational institutions and highlights the importance of vigilant security measures to safeguard students and staff alike.”
Meanwhile, the university’s management is now implementing increased security measures to prevent future incidents and maintain the safety of the university community.
