A 38-year-old man, Adekunle Rotimi, has been arrested for allegedly trying to strangle a policewoman while attempting to escape from a courtroom in Osogbo, Osun State.
Rotimi was in court for a case of unlawful possession of firearms when he reportedly tried to flee. According to the police prosecutor, Saheed Anifowose, the suspect pinned Policewoman Babatunde Omotayo inside a fish pond within the court premises and tried to strangle her while escaping.
He was immediately arrested and charged with attempted murder and attempted escape.
During his arraignment at the Osun State Magistrate’s Court, Rotimi pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer, Dauda Oyewale, requested bail, arguing that the offenses were bailable under the law.
However, the prosecutor opposed the request, stating that Rotimi had been in custody for illegal possession of firearms and only pretended he wanted to urinate before trying to escape.
Presiding Magistrate, Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, granted him bail at N2 million, with one surety who must own land in Osun State.
The case was adjourned to May 8 for further hearing.
