The Super Eagles will begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday, with coach Eric Chelle demanding a strong start from his players. The Nigeria Madagascar qualifier promises to be an intense contest right from the opening whistle.
According to The Guardian, Nigeria will host the Barea at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29. Anticipation is high for the Nigeria Madagascar qualifier, as both teams look to gain an early advantage in the group.
The three-time African champions are determined to avoid another slow qualifying start after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria earned only two points from its opening two matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe during that failed qualifying campaign.
Chelle demands aggressive start
Chelle said his players must show their qualification ambitions from the opening match.
“We have to show everyone from Day One that we want it, and the only way to do that is to go for it with our hearts, and refuse to slow down at any point,” he said.
“We must go for the points without any hesitation.”
Nigeria will play without injured striker Victor Osimhen, with Taiwo Awoniyi drafted into the squad. Selection for the Nigeria Madagascar qualifier could be crucial for squad rotation.
Chelle can also choose from attacking options including Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams and newcomer George Ilenikhena.
Madagascar revive 2019 memories
Madagascar will hope to repeat their famous 2-0 victory over Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The Nigeria Madagascar qualifier will give both teams a chance to write a new chapter in their rivalry.
However, Nigeria had won their previous two meetings before that defeat.
Madagascar arrived in Uyo three days before the game as they prepare to challenge the Super Eagles for the opening three points.
NFF set to honour Moses Simon
The Nigeria Football Federation will also honour Moses Simon if he makes his 100th senior appearance for the country during the match.
Simon currently has 99 caps and 12 goals for Nigeria after making his Super Eagles debut in March 2015.
Nigeria have won 49, drawn 30 and lost 20 of the matches in which the winger has featured.
The Group L encounter is scheduled to kick off at 5pm.
