The Federal Government has urged Nigerians living abroad to use their expertise, investments and international networks to support the country’s development. This is especially important in the context of Diaspora investment Nigeria as it has the potential to accelerate economic growth.
According to The PUNCH, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the call during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the significance of Diaspora investment Nigeria during her address.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima also attended the meeting.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigerians abroad should not be viewed only as a source of remittances but as strategic partners in national development and key drivers of Diaspora investment Nigeria.
Diaspora Nigerians ‘more than remittances’
“Nigerians abroad are more than a source of remittances. You are professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, innovators and important bridges between Nigeria and the international community,” the minister said.
She also directed Nigerian embassies, high commissions and consulates to remain responsive to citizens who require legitimate consular assistance.
“The welfare of Nigerians abroad must remain a priority. Our missions must listen, engage and assist our citizens within the limits of international law and the laws of host countries,” she said.
The minister also urged Nigerians overseas to respect the laws of the countries where they live.
FG seeks stronger Diaspora partnerships
Odumegwu-Ojukwu called for partnerships in investment, innovation, mentorship and international business to further promote Diaspora investment Nigeria.
“Your knowledge and international exposure are invaluable assets to our country. We want a stronger partnership with our Diaspora,” she said.
She encouraged Nigerians abroad to mentor young people, support innovation and connect Nigerian businesses with opportunities in international markets.
The minister said government would continue working with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and diplomatic missions to improve engagement.
“Wherever you may reside, Nigeria remains our common heritage. Distance does not diminish citizenship,” she said.
She added that Nigerians around the world play an important role in shaping the country’s international reputation. Clearly, Diaspora investment Nigeria remains a pivotal part of the country’s future progress.
