Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has slammed the inconsistency of referees following his side’s 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Sheffield United.

Solskjaer’s men missed out on a chance to regain the lead on top of the league, conceding to Manchester City who have a game at hand.

Reacting after the game at Old Trafford, the Norwegian highlighted two mistakes by referee Peter Bankes leading to Sheffield’s first goal and United’s cancelled equaliser.

According to Solskjaer, Kean Bryan’s opening goal should not have stood because Billy Sharp interfered with David de Gea.

He also questioned the ruling of Anthony Martial’s goal minutes later, claiming there was no foul on Aaron Ramsdale, admitting that his team “didn’t create big enough chances to score enough goals.”

Solskjaer told BT Sport: “It’s a foul. Billy Sharp just runs into him (De Gea) so he can’t get up, so it’s a foul.”

When asked about Martial’s disallowed effort, Solskjaer said, “No foul… but it’s this kind of season, inconsistencies, so it’s going to be unpredictable. But it’s two mistakes by the referee.”

United have lost two of their last four Premier League home games against the side starting the day bottom of the table (also 0-1 v West Brom, April 2018), one more loss than in their other 21 such matches in the competition (W16 D4 L1).

Meanwhile, The Blades secured their second win of the season and first away win against Manchester United since December 1973, ending an eight-game losing run in all competitions at Old Trafford. [OptaJoe]
