Troops of the Nigerian military, working in concert with a joint task force and local vigilante groups, have killed four suspected kidnappers believed to have terrorised Ogbadibo community in Benue State for years.
The suspects were said to have been neutralised after an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap a Catholic priest in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to security sources, the assailants fled toward Benue State following the failed abduction but were intercepted by soldiers near Orokam.
A gun duel reportedly followed, during which four members of the gang were fatally shot, according to Daily Post.
The incident triggered celebrations across Ogbadibo and nearby communities, where residents said prolonged fear had defined daily life due to persistent criminal attacks.
Locals identified the deceased suspects as members of a notorious gang linked to frequent assaults along the Enugu–Otukpo highway, a key commercial corridor connecting Benue and Enugu states.
The route has long been associated with kidnapping, armed robbery, and killings, with traders, commuters, and entrepreneurs often targeted for ransom.
Residents said the outcome of the operation has brought relief and renewed optimism, expressing belief that continued security efforts would help restore enduring peace.
As at the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released an official statement on the operation.
