At least seven people were killed and several others injured after two roadside explosions struck northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, according to a police official.

The blasts took place in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an area located near the restive North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Police said explosive devices had been planted along the roadside.

The first blast targeted a passenger van, leaving five people dead and three others wounded, district police chief Yasir Afridi told reporters.

A second explosion followed as residents were moving the bodies and injured victims into ambulances.

The attack claimed the lives of at least two more people.
