Setien threatens legal action against Barcelona for contract termination

Published

Sacked Barcelona coach Quique Setien has threatened to take legal action against Barcelona over the manner the Spanish giants sacked him.

Setien was fire as coach after the clubs 8-2 demolition at the hands of Bayern Munich in August and the loss of the La Liga title to Real Madrid.

Barca announced the sacking of Setien on August 17, but didn’t officially inform the coach until this Wednesday, which was September 16.

“Following a month of complete silence from the Barcelona board and following various requests made by us, we didn’t receive the first official communication from the club until yesterday [Wednesday] and did so via burofax,” Setien’s statement started.

“This communication reveals the clear intention of the board to not fulfil the employment contracts signed on January 14, 2020.

“In my case, the club and the president very publicly announced my sacking with immediate effect on August 17.

“However, it wasn’t until yesterday – which was almost one month later on September 16 – that they first sent me the official communication of this sacking – without any settlement.

“With respect to the rest of the coaching staff, they were told yesterday – much to our surprise – that they would be subject to ‘a significant relocation’ in the club.

“Given all the above, we’ve felt the need to put the resolution of our contracts in the hands of our lawyers, having to lodge the corresponding legal action.

“This is all with the aim of defending our rights and defending what was agreed with Barcelona at the time.” [TB]
