In a move aimed at making public transport more accessible and affordable for Lagosians, the state government has announced a 30% reduction in fare for the Red Line transportation system.

Effective immediately, the fare will drop from N1,500 to N1,000, a decision that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu shared during the inauguration of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal on Tuesday.

Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the fare cut was part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance the accessibility of the Red Line system and improve the overall public transport experience for residents.

“We’ve done our calculations, and today, we are pleased to announce a fare reduction that brings down the cost from N1,500 to N1,000, a 30% discount,” he said.

The unveiling of the terminal marks another milestone in the government’s commitment to modernising Lagos’ transportation system.

Reflecting on the state’s transportation transformation, Sanwo-Olu reminded Lagosians that just six years ago, the government promised to upgrade the city’s public infrastructure, and this promise continues to take shape with the introduction of more advanced facilities like the Abule Egba Bus Terminal.

“In addition to the Red and Blue Rail Lines, we are moving ahead with ambitious plans for the Green and Purple Rail Lines. These new lines will expand access to vital areas of the state, like the Lekki Free Zone and the Lagos-Badagry corridor,” he said.

The Green Line, which is set to connect Marina to key destinations along the Lekki-Epe corridor, is expected to transport over one million passengers daily upon completion.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also mentioned that new fleets of Compressed Natural Gas (and electric buses will be added to the public transport network by the third quarter of 2025, ensuring more frequent services for commuters.

Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority also highlighted the government’s vision of an integrated transport system, where various modes of transit work seamlessly together to ensure smooth and convenient commuting for the people of Lagos.
