Sanwo-Olu donates N50m to armed forces on remembrance day

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced a donation of N50 million to the State Council of the Nigerian Legion to support veterans and the families of fallen heroes.

The governor made this announcement during the Appeal Fund and Launching of the Year 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem ceremony at the Lagos House, Ikeja on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of easing the lives of Legionnaires and the families of fallen heroes, expressing his dedication to their welfare.

He officially launched the emblem and appeal fund, setting the stage for the commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15, 2024.

Addressing the audience, which included Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, members of the State Executive Council, Service Commanders, Commissioners of Police, and officials of the Nigerian Legion, Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering the widows of fallen heroes.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation would collaborate with the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion to ensure widows benefit from government interventions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the service and sacrifices of the Nigerian Legion and fallen heroes, assuring Legionnaires of their inclusion in various government intervention programs.

He said, “Legionnaires would not be left out of the various intervention programmes of the state government.”

Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, DCG Akeem Olawale Wolimoh expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his welfare initiatives.

He remarked, “I want to use this moment of appreciation for the sacrifices of the fallen heroes and military veterans as a point of contact and plead with Mr Governor to continue in your usual manner of supporting the Nigerian Legion in Lagos State.”

Wolimoh noted that the generosity experienced in Lagos was rarely enjoyed by other State Councils of the Nigerian Legion nationwide.

Hon. Olanrewaju Layode, Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, shared details about the upcoming 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, culminating in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa, Lagos, on January 15, 2024.
