Sanwo-Olu charges Super Eagles to win AFCON

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the members of the Super Eagles to aim for victory in the Africa Cup of Nations as a source of relief for Nigerians facing economic challenges. 

The governor delivered this charge during a special dinner at Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday evening, as the team prepared for their departure to Cote d’Ivoire for the AFCON competition scheduled to commence on Saturday.

Addressing the players, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the unifying role of the national team and urged them to represent the collective spirit of Nigerians. He expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, encouraging them to believe in themselves and demonstrate their undying spirit on the field.

Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the challenges facing the country, including economic difficulties, but emphasized the potential of sports, particularly football, to bring people together and serve as a healing tool. 

He stated, “We need that cup to be a succor that would energize us and bring together all the yearnings of this country.”

Highlighting the significance of patriotism, he urged the players to be driven by a sense of patronage and love for the country. 

He reminded them that their success in the tournament could become a historic achievement, leaving a lasting legacy.

The governor conveyed the support of over 220 million Nigerians, both within the country and in the diaspora, urging the team to remain resilient and not give up, regardless of the challenges they might face during the matches. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, commitment, and belief in themselves until the final whistle.

Key figures present at the event included the Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, among others.
