Sanwo-Olu approves 25% discount on Lagos BRT fares
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a 25% discount on fares for regulated bus and rail transportation systems across routes in the state. The discount takes effect from Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
The directive came in response to public outcry following the cancellation of a 50% rebate on fares for regulated bus, Bus Rapid Transit, and rail transport in the state. The rebate was introduced in August 2023 to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.
In a statement, the Head of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Kolawole Ojelabi, said the Governor approved the 25% discount following appeals from commuters.
LAMATA also noted that the pump price of diesel had jumped from N867 in August to N1,300 in November, representing a 50% increase.
“Following appeals to the Governor, he has extended the passenger fare reduction by 25 per cent across the regulated bus and rail transport services until another review is announced.
“Within the three months of the rebate, the pump price of diesel jumped from N867 in August to N1,300 in November 2023 representing about 50 per cent jump,” he said.
Recall that Wuzup Nigeria reported that the Lagos State Government had announced that the 50% transport fare discount on all public transport systems be cancelled, effective November 6, 2023.
The discount was introduced in August 2023 to cushion the effect of fuel price increases on residents.
