Ronaldo receives match ban for gesture to fans after ‘Messi’ chants

Published

Cristiano Ronaldo, the forward for Al-Nassr, has received a one-match ban for “provoking fans” following the team’s victory over Al-Shabab in the Saudi Pro League.

After Al-Nassr’s 3-2 win against Al-Shabab in Riyadh, fans of the opposing team chanted “Messi,” referring to Ronaldo’s longtime rival Lionel Messi.

In response, the Portugal captain, aged 39, cupped his hand to his ear and gestured towards the fans.

As a consequence, Ronaldo has been fined 30,000 Saudi Riyals by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.

The SAFF disciplinary and ethics committee clarified that Ronaldo cannot appeal against the decision.

Despite opening the scoring from the penalty spot, Al-Shabab managed to equalize twice before Talisca scored an 87th-minute winner.

Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr from Manchester United in December 2022, reportedly earning the biggest football salary in history, has been a prolific scorer for the team.

He has netted 20 goals in 22 league games this season, contributing significantly to Al-Nassr’s position as runners-up in the league, trailing behind Al-Hilal.
