The family of a 60-year-old woman, Dole Enoch, has accused a Rivers State police unit – Octupus strike force also known as C-4-i for her death at Okelle waterfront in the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt.
Son of the diseased, Kelvin Enoch, said his hypertensive mother died after several hours of gunshot allegedly by the operatives of the outfit, causing his mother to collapse last Sunday evening.
Kelvin said the incident has been reported to the Azikiwe Divisional Police Headquarters in Mile two, Port Harcourt, urging the authority to investigate the incident and the operatives involved.
“Yesterday I came from the river. I packed my boat. As I was coming out, C-4-i was shooting. The shooting was too much and my mother is hypertensive.
“The shooting was still going for hours, my mother started complaining and before we know she collapsed and died instantly.
“We now took her to the mortuary. She was the one assisting us with everything. We don’t have anybody again. I want the CP to investigate this matter. We need justice,” the grieving man said.
Meanwhile, a member of a local vigilante group in the area, Promise Brown said he was preparing for a survival party of his friend when the strike force arrived and packed all the musical instruments and other items in the party arena.
Brown described the action of the police unit as unwarranted, pointing out that there were no security threats in the area.
“We were surprised when Octupus (police unit) came. They packed everything, speakers, chairs, generator inside their van. They even arrested some people.
“For two hours they were shooting, to the extent that one woman suffering from high blood pressure, sixty years old woman died instantly.
“We reported the matter to Azikiwe police division. The DCO came here to see everything. We don’t know what happened because here in Okwelle, we don’t steal.
“Anybody that steals here, we must ensure the person is arrested and handed over to the Police,” Brown stated.
When contacted, spokesman for the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said he was aware of the ‘matter’ and was waiting to be fully briefed by the unit commander.
“I am aware of that matter. I know we went for an operation and it was successful. But I am waiting to be fully briefed by the unit commander before making any categorical statement on that,” Omoni explained.
