Recovered loots: FG owes Nigerians an explanation – Sultan
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar III has called on the Federal government to be transparent in its handling of looted billions of naira recovered from past and present corrupt leaders.
Recall that the Federal Government had recently recovered the sum of £4.2m as part of funds looted by a former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, from the United Kingdom.
In a statement by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, who spoke on behalf of the Sultan at the zonal dialogue with stakeholders in Sokoto on Tuesday, noted the prolonged silence on the looted funds would mitigate the war against corruption in Nigeria.
According to The PUNCH, Junaidu spoke on the ‘National Ethics and Integrity Policy’ at the event organized by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the North-West zone of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission.
“The government owes Nigerians an explanation; we want to know how much billions of naira was recovered from our past leaders, where the monies are, and what are they doing with them?
“This explanation is necessary considering the state of our education and other infrastructure like roads, which need serious government attention,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, claimed that the recovered fund to Delta state, while the Delta State Government said it was yet to receive the funds as claimed by the Idris.
It should be noted that the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had recently stated that the state could not benefit from the recovered loot, stressing that Nigeria would execute other projects with the fund.
