Persons with disabilities have called for more accessible polling centres and greater inclusion in society. This ongoing call highlights the urgent need to improve PWD voting access. This comes as voting continues in the Osun governorship election.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the appeal was made on Saturday by Mrs Justina Obozokhai, a wheelchair user. She made the appeal after casting her ballot at Ilare III, Ward III, Unit 011, in Ife Central Local Government Area. She noted that PWD voting access should be ensured at every polling unit.
Obozokhai urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to make polling units easier to access for people with disabilities, so that PWD voting access can be guaranteed for all. She said the electoral process should allow every eligible voter to participate conveniently regardless of physical condition.
She said she decided to participate in the election because of the importance of choosing leaders. Furthermore, she cited the value of contributing to the democratic process.
PWDs seek greater opportunities
Beyond voting, Obozokhai called on government agencies and other stakeholders to create more opportunities for persons with disabilities. She emphasised the need for such opportunities particularly in education and employment, for true PWD voting access and inclusion.
She said people living with disabilities possess skills and abilities that can contribute meaningfully to their communities. This is possible when they are given the necessary support and opportunities.
Obozokhai also called for stronger representation of PWDs in governance and other areas of public life. She stressed the need for a society where disability does not prevent citizens from participating fully.
Her appeal adds to continuing calls for electoral authorities to ensure polling centres and voting arrangements accommodate people with different forms of disability.
