The carcass of popular Zambian fish, Mafishi, which died on Monday has gone missing from the freezer where it was kept.
Mafishi, a giant fish pond at the Copperbelt University (CBU), threw the country into mourning after it was announced dead.
Messages poured in on twitter as the fish maintained a position in the trending topics on the platform on Monday.
Part of those who mourned the fish are President Edgar Lungu and opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema.
President Lungu quoted Mahatma Gandhi while mourning the fish, writing that “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Mr Hichilema wrote: “We stand with the CBU student community, past and present, over the death of their iconic pet Mafishi.”
Mafishi was considered a stress reliever by students of CBU with some of them relying on it for exam success.
To mourn the fish which has been in the school’s pond for seven years, the students lit candles and marched around the premises on Monday night.
