According to Reuters, the pontiff made the appeal in a message delivered to the AI4Peace conference at Rome’s Pontifical Lateran University on Monday, specifically mentioning the need to consider Pope Leo AI principles for responsible development.
“In a world marked by conflict and division, the development of artificial intelligence calls for a vision inspired by wisdom and charity,” he said.
Pope Leo pushes ethical AI
The pope urged developers to create systems that respect human dignity and strengthen relationships between people. Notably, Pope Leo AI guidelines have emphasized ethics and social benefit in this field.
Artificial intelligence has become a recurring concern during Leo’s papacy. The pontiff has previously warned about misinformation and the potential use of the technology to fuel conflict. As a result, AI is frequently referenced in debates about faith and technology.
He has also called for international regulation as governments and technology companies race to develop increasingly powerful AI systems.
The AI4Peace conference brought together academics and international experts to discuss artificial intelligence, ethics and peacebuilding.
Leo’s message was delivered to participants by Rev. Andrea Ciucci of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life.
