Police promote 5718 officers

The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 5,718 senior police officers, which includes those on general duties and specialist roles. 

The promotion was confirmed by the PSC’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement on Thursday. 

The promotions include:

  • 12 Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police.
  • 19 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the substantive rank of Commissioners of Police.
  • 21 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Deputy Commissioners.
  • 33 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners.
  • 265 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents.
  • 59 Deputy Superintendents to Superintendents.
  • 4,750 Assistant Superintendents and another 146 Assistant Superintendents who were omitted during the May 2022 promotion exercise were elevated to Deputy Superintendent of Police.

For the specialist cadre, promotions include:

  • Two Assistant Commissioners of Police, one from Airwing and the other from Forensic, to the next rank of Deputy Commissioners.
  •  47 Chief Superintendents of Police, comprising 23 medical doctors and 24 veterinary doctors, promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police.
  • 190 Superintendents of Police from various units, such as Computer Infotech, Works, Transport, Forensic, Handwriting, Ballistics, Religion, and Veterinary, were also promoted.
  • 47 specialists of Assistant Superintendent of Police rank from different units were promoted to Deputy Superintendents.

The PSC Chairman, Solomon Arase, urged the newly promoted officers to embrace a new policing culture that focuses on being people-friendly and respecting human rights.
