An unidentified suspected member of an armed robbery gang has been fatally gunned down in the Ekpan area of Delta State after attempting to flee from security operatives.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, the incident occurred when operatives of the Ekpan Divisional undercover surveillance patrol team encountered a tricycle with three occupants along Army Barracks Link Road off Refinery Road in Ekpan.

The occupants, suspected to be armed robbers who typically target and rob innocent citizens, attempted to double-cross the operatives.

Upon realizing they were policemen, the suspects fled, prompting a chase. One suspect was arrested, and a black bag containing a cut-to-size double-barrel gun and two live cartridges was recovered.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect revealed that the two other suspects who escaped were his gang members. They usually double-crossed their victims, robbed them, and sometimes kidnapped them.” Edafe stated.

In an effort to apprehend the fleeing gang members, the suspect led the operatives to their hideout along the NNPC Link Road in Ekpan. However, in a desperate attempt to evade capture, the suspect jumped off a bridge, sustaining injuries from shots fired by the police.
