The Police Command in Niger has discovered the lifeless body of a baby, believed to be only a day old, in a farmland in Tayi village, Minna.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Niger, SP Waisu Abiodun, informed the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday about the incident.
He said, “On August 9, we received information from the GRA Police Division that a lifeless body of an ‘about a day old child’ was found in a farmland in Tayi village, Minna.”
Police officers from the GRA Division responded to the scene and called in welfare officials from Chanchaga Local Government Area.
A medical practitioner, who was brought to examine the baby, confirmed that the child was already dead.
“The welfare officials brought a doctor to the scene who confirmed that the baby was dead,” Abiodun added.
The police are currently investigating the incident with the help of the community to find out who is responsible.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, speculated on the cause of the tragedy. “The baby might have been abandoned by a woman who was pregnant out of wedlock. The baby was likely left while still alive, but due to severe exposure to cold, it died. This is the first time we are seeing such an occurrence in our area,” the resident said.
