The Abia State Police Command says two suspects have been arrested over conspiracy, attempted child theft and possession of drugs in Umuahia.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, for the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the police named the suspects as Nzubechi Chinagorom, male, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, male, 25, all of Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The police explained that on May 25, 2026, the suspects went to the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, female, 32, of the same address.
“Nzubechi Chinagorom attempted to forcefully take away her two-week-old baby girl, which resulted in a struggle with the mother. In the process, he assaulted her and stabbed her with a kitchen knife, causing the child to fall and hit her head on the ground,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the police said Chinonso Chibundu remained outside the house, acting as a lookout.
Following the victim’s distress call, both suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly found taking substances suspected to be hard drugs.
The mother and child were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they received treatment and have since recovered.
The statement disclosed that the suspects were apprehended, exhibits were recovered, and investigation has been concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The suspects will be charged to court on June 2.
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property and advised residents to partner with the police in crime prevention by reporting any security concerns to the nearest police station.
