The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Saheed Eegunjobi, for allegedly attacking and robbing a commercial motorcyclist in Ibadan.
The arrest was announced in a statement on Monday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka.
According to the police, Eegunjobi and an accomplice still at large posed as passengers and boarded a motorcycle from the Mokola area. Upon reaching the Modina area of Idi-Aro, they stopped the bike, attacked the rider, Sakiru Tiamiyu, 32, and inflicted head injuries with a cutlass.
The victim fell off the motorcycle during the assault, and the fleeing accomplice escaped with the stolen bike. Passersby, with the help of the Agbekoya Vigilante Group, apprehended Eegunjobi and handed him over to the police.
Olayinka stated that the suspect confessed during interrogation. The injured rider was rushed to a hospital for treatment, and police have visited the scene and the hospital as part of the investigation.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice and recover the stolen motorcycle,” the PPRO added.
He emphasized that the operation highlights the importance of collaboration between the police, community-based groups, and the public in combating crime.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-driven and collaborative policing to rid the state of criminal elements.
