Police have arrested a 30-year-old man, Aminu Mohammed, for allegedly pretending to be a Nigerian Army personnel for the past two years in Magaji Quarters, Bauchi Local Government Area.
The spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, revealed the arrest on Thursday. He said, “Aminu Mohammed was apprehended on Monday by operatives from the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate Divisional Police ‘C’ Division after a complaint was filed against him.”
Wakil explained that impersonating a military personnel is a serious crime under Sections 110(1) and 251 of the Criminal Code. He added, “The suspect collected N210,000 from an unsuspecting individual, promising to help him secure a job with the Nigerian Army.”
The suspect had falsely directed his victim to meet his friend, who is currently at large, to facilitate the victim’s entry into the Nigerian Military School in Zaria, Kaduna State. Wakil said, “After spending eight days in Zaria, the victim could not meet the person who was supposed to take him to the training school.”
Preliminary police investigations showed that Aminu Mohammed had never served or worked with the military. Wakil noted, “The suspect had obtained a pair of camouflage trousers from his friend, who is a serving military personnel.”
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. CP Auwal Musa, the state’s Commissioner of Police, has ordered a thorough probe to uncover more facts and aid in the prosecution. Wakil stated, “This is to uncover more facts that will aid in prosecution.”
The police continue to investigate the case and seek additional information about the suspect’s accomplices.
