Police arrest eight suspects over six Delta cops killing


Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have apprehended eight suspects allegedly involved in the killing of six policemen in the Ughelli area of Delta State.

The arrest comes shortly after five individuals were detained in connection with the murder of the officers, as announced by the police last week.

The identities of the slain officers were disclosed by the police, including Inspector Abe Olubunmi, Inspector Friday Irorere, Sergeant Kuden Elisha, Sergeant Akpan Aniette, Sergeant Ayere Paul, and Sergeant Ejemito Friday. They were ambushed on February 23 while on a rescue mission in Ohoro Forest in the state.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the policemen were attacked by armed assailants during a mission to investigate the disappearance and rescue of three of their colleagues.

Adejobi confirmed the arrest of five suspects initially, bringing the total in custody to 13.

Providing an update on the case, Adejobi stated that the suspects are currently in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation, thanks to the intensive efforts of the police operatives.

“The arrested suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this reprehensible act, and many alike, are brought to justice swiftly and decisively,” Adejobi affirmed.

He assured the public that the suspects would face prosecution once investigations are concluded, emphasizing the police’s determination to ensure justice for the fallen officers.

“The Nigeria Police is deeply saddened by the heinous act of violence against our officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time,” Adejobi expressed.

In a resolute statement, Adejobi reiterated the police’s determination to hold all perpetrators of violence against officers accountable.

“We wish to reiterate that killers of our officers in this extant case, and many others, have murdered peace, and none of them will go unpunished,” he vowed.
