Police arrest 20 suspected Yoruba nation agitators for invading Oyo assembly

Police in Oyo State have detained 20 individuals suspected of being Yoruba nation agitators following an alleged invasion of the state’s House of Assembly complex in Ibadan on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, a group of people purportedly stormed the complex situated near the government secretariat in an apparent bid to seize control of it.

Confirming the arrests, Oyo State Police spokesman, SP Adewale Osifeso, issued a statement in Ibadan detailing the items confiscated from the suspects.

“The 20 suspects apprehended were found in possession of three pump-action guns, 29 life cartridges, two expended cartridges, 67 cutlasses, five bulletproof vests, six pairs of boots, 10 Public Address Systems, three berets with Oodua insignia, seven belts, 11 Oodua Nation camouflage uniforms, one unregistered bus, and three motorcycles,” Osifeso disclosed.

He emphasized that law enforcement, in collaboration with other security agencies, effectively thwarted the attempt by the agitators to forcefully take over the secretariat.

“The suspects, dressed in military camouflage, arrived heavily armed in an unregistered bus, carrying cutlasses, pump-action rifles, cartridges, assorted charms, and an Oodua Nation agitation flag,” Osifeso stated, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

He characterized the suspects’ actions as criminal, unpatriotic, and tantamount to treasonable felony and terrorism.

Osifeso assured that appropriate punishment would be administered to those found guilty, underscoring the police’s commitment to safeguarding law-abiding citizens.

Furthermore, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebola Hamzat, has directed an investigation and an expansion of efforts to apprehend others linked to the incident.
