Jigawa tea vendor arrested for killing alleged bread thief

A tea vendor named Abdulrashidu Ya’u in Jigawa State has been accused of killing 20-year-old Hassan Garba over claims that Garba stole bread, milk, noodles, and petrol.

The incident occurred on August 19, 2024, around 5:00 am in Sararai village, Jigawar Tsada town, Dutse Local Government Area.

Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, confirmed the details in a statement on Tuesday. He said that when the police received the report, a patrol team was quickly sent to the scene. They arrested the suspect and took the victim to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

Unfortunately, Adam noted that when they arrived, “The medical doctor on duty certified the 20-year-man dead. His remains were examined, photographed, and later released to his relatives for burial according to Islamic rite.”

During questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, Ya’u admitted that Garba had angered him by stealing his goods. “He made the decision to tie him with a rope and began striking him with a whip in secret,” said Adam.

Neighbors heard Garba’s cries for help but were unable to intervene before the police arrived. Adam assured that once the investigation is complete, Ya’u will be taken to court to face charges.

In a separate incident, on August 20, 2024, Mamuda Yusuf from Kadume village reported that his motorcycle was stolen at Hadejia General Hospital. Police were alerted and, on August 21, 2024, arrested Aliyu Aliyu, 24, of Gagulmari Quarters, Hadejia LGA. The stolen motorcycle was found in his possession.

“During the interrogation process at the Divisional Crime Branch Hadejia, the suspect admitted to committing the alleged offense,” Adam said. Aliyu has been charged and will face prosecution in court.
