Plane crashlands at Abuja Airport, runway closed for investigation
A Boeing 737 passenger jet belonging to Aerocontractors Airlines crash-landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred as the aircraft, with registration marks 5N-BYQ, attempted to exit the runway.
Despite the severity of the incident, there were no reported injuries or fatalities. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, a government agency, confirmed the occurrence of a “serious accident” around 10:47 am local time.
The aircraft had just arrived from Lagos when its nose wheel got stuck in the grass verge, and its fuselage remained on the runway.
James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, issued a statement confirming the incident and the initiation of investigations.
He stated, “The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been notified and has commenced an investigation into a serious incident involving a Boeing 737 with nationality and registration marks 5N-BYQ belonging to Aerocontractors Airlines.”
As a result of the incident, the runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was closed temporarily to allow for the towing of the aircraft. This closure impacted other flight operations at the airport.
NSIB has called on the public to provide information, such as pictures, videos, or recording evidence, to assist in the comprehensive investigation.
The bureau emphasized the importance of respecting the privacy of individuals on board and cautioned against assuming the cause of the incident until a formal report is released.
