PHOTOS: Celebration as Israel, Hamas embrace ceasefire
After 11 days of firepower exchange, Israel and Hamas have embraced an Egyptian-mediated truce on Friday after the worst violence in years, according to Reuters.
The world watched in shock as tensions between Israeli and Palestinian forces climaxed in Gaza on 10 May at a holy site revered by both Muslims and Jews.
The BBC reported that Hamas began firing rockets after warning Israel to withdraw from the site, triggering retaliatory air strikes.
Gaza health officials said 232 Palestinians, including 65 children, had been killed and more than 1,900 wounded in aerial bombardments. Israel said it had killed at least 160 combatants.
Authorities put the death toll in Israel at 12, with hundreds of people treated for injuries in rocket attacks that caused panic and sent people rushing into shelters.
However, following a truce between both warring forces, Palestinians poured into Gaza’s streets to celebrate.
