Nigerian singer and producer Pheelz has said building a timeless catalogue has become more important to him. In fact, the Pheelz music legacy is now a primary concern, valued more than deliberately chasing hit records.
Pheelz, in an interview with Punch, said he believes his music will allow his legacy to continue long after his lifetime. He described that as one of his biggest motivations at this stage of his career, showing the importance of the Pheelz music legacy.
Pheelz prioritises lasting music over hits
“I don’t make music for the hits. I am building an incredible catalogue musically because, at the end of the day, I believe I will live forever through my music, and that’s the most important thing for me right now,” Pheelz said.
He added that while hit songs may emerge along the way, his main focus is creating a body of work with lasting value. In this way, the goal aligns with the Pheelz music legacy.
“The focus is building an incredible catalogue that will live forever,” he said. Pheelz recently released his album, “A Rii Set,” a project he described as representing freedom and a personal reset.
According to him, the album came from a desire to return to the fundamentals of music. He wanted to rediscover his love for the craft and create without unnecessary restrictions.
The project features collaborations with Tiwa Savage, Young Jonn and Flavour.
Pheelz said working with other established musicians allowed the creative process to remain centred on the music. He explained that this was better than focusing on individual egos.
Pheelz reflects on musical evolution
The producer-turned-performing artiste also rejected the idea that his career involved a complete transition from producer to singer.
He explained that he had always considered himself an artiste, even during the years when he was primarily known for producing songs for others.
Pheelz recalled growing up around music in church. There, he played instruments and at one point served as a choir master.
He said those early experiences helped prepare him for a professional career that began while he was still a teenager. Moreover, the Pheelz music legacy is deeply rooted in these formative years.
Reflecting on his years in the industry, Pheelz said watching Afrobeats expand globally has been remarkable. This is especially true after beginning his career during a very different period for Nigerian music.
He added that his current focus remains growth, experimentation and creating music that audiences can continue enjoying for generations. Therefore, building the Pheelz music legacy is an ongoing journey.
