The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially ended the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential race, with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reportedly standing as the only aspirant to obtain the party’s presidential forms.

According to TheSun, the party revealed that Obi was the lone contender before the deadline for the collection of presidential nomination forms expired on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

His unopposed entry has positioned him as the leading figure ahead of the party’s internal selection process.

Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, recently defected to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His move has continued to generate discussions across Nigeria’s political space as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC announced that although the window for presidential form purchases has closed, aspirants seeking governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly tickets have been granted an extension until midnight of May 24, 2026.

The party further disclosed that screening exercises for all aspirants will commence on May 19 and conclude on May 26, 2026. Successful candidates are expected to proceed to the nomination phase scheduled to hold between May 20 and May 26.

According to the NDC, aspirants are required to submit academic credentials, voter identification cards, birth certificates or sworn declarations of age, passport photographs, party membership evidence, and six copies of their curriculum vitae as part of the screening requirements.

The party also stated that the screening process would evaluate aspirants based on competence, integrity, grassroots support, and compliance with zoning arrangements and local political considerations. It added that the exercise would reflect the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities.

With no other aspirant stepping forward before the close of nominations, Obi is widely tipped to emerge as the NDC’s consensus presidential candidate once the screening and clearance procedures are concluded.
