Panic as residents discover container loaded with live bullets in Anambra
Shock and fear gripped Anambra State residents in the early hours of Sunday after they discovered a loaded container filled with live bullets in the Onitsha area of the state.
The discovery comes amidst rumour of a civil war despite the alarming spike in the cases of insecurity in the country, including kidnapping and terrorism.
The Nation reported that the cartons of bullets spilled into a drainage when a Mercedes Benz 911 truck conveying the ammunitions out of Onitsha to an unknown destination fell along Awka road in the city and skidded off the road.
Security operatives were swept into action to cordon off the arena after a alarm was raised by residents.
“The truck fell around 5am. The driver and his conductor after sustaining minor injuries tried to evacuate and conceal the contents of the truck but they could not do much before daybreak when some police operatives arrived at the scene and discovered the truck was laden with live bullets,” a witness said.
Meanwhile, an unnamed Senior Police Officer confirmed the incident, adding that the driver of the vehicle had been arrested and the lorry impounded.
The conductor, however, fled the scene.
‘We are going to get to the root of the matter. The conductor is equally being trailed. It’s a very difficult times for everybody and people have to be careful,” he said
