One person was killed and at least 17 others were injured after a vehicle crashed into a crowd attending Berlin’s LGBTQ+ parade on Saturday evening.
The Berlin fire brigade said three victims suffered life-threatening injuries, while eight others were in serious condition, according to Sky News.
Authorities identified a suspect in the incident early Sunday morning as a member of Berlin’s “Islamist scene,” police said. Officers and prosecutors appealed for assistance in locating the 21-year-old man, identified as Abdul B.
“We have now identified a suspected perpetrator. Measures against this suspected perpetrator, who has not yet been arrested, are underway. However, this suspected perpetrator is known to the police as a member of the Islamist scene here in Berlin,” said the spokesperson.
Police said a car entered Tiergarten park, near the route of the Pride march, before striking several people gathered in the area.
Hundreds of thousands of people had travelled to Berlin on Saturday to take part in the city’s Pride celebration, officially known in Germany as Christopher Street Day. The event is among the largest LGBTQ+ festivals in Europe.
German authorities on Sunday issued a wanted notice for the suspect accused of driving a van into crowds near Berlin’s Pride festival, an attack that left one person dead and at least 16 others injured.
Police and prosecutors urged the public to provide information that could help locate Abdul B., who is 21 years old.
Authorities said the suspect was believed to have injured multiple people using a moving vehicle, after which one or more individuals reportedly left the vehicle. Police also said that several people appeared to have been stabbed during the incident.
