The ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has defended President Bola Tinubu against questions about his primary and secondary school education, arguing that many Nigerians of his generation did not attend conventional schools.
Omokri made the remarks on Sunday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he addressed concerns surrounding the President’s educational background.
According to him, some Nigerians were homeschooled during the period Tinubu would have attended primary and secondary school, stressing that the absence of conventional school certificates should not be treated as a significant issue.
“Are you aware that at the time the president went to primary school, at the time the president would have gone to primary school, secondary school, most Nigerians were not going to regular schools; a lot of them were being homeschooled,” Omokri said.
He also challenged those questioning Tinubu’s educational history to provide evidence of the classmates they attended primary school with.
“If you ask some of these opponents of the president to produce their primary school classmate, they cannot,” he said.
Omokri further cited his family as an example, revealing that one of his children is homeschooled and that his Ethiopian wife also received her education through homeschooling.
He maintained that Tinubu possesses the qualifications required to occupy the presidency and contest for another term in 2027.
“We know for a fact that the president is qualified for the position he’s holding, for the position he wants to be reelected to,” he said.
Addressing Tinubu’s tertiary education, Omokri pointed to the President’s attendance at Chicago State University, noting that the institution’s registrar testified in court and confirmed that Tinubu was admitted, attended and graduated from the university.
“He went to Chicago State University. The registrar of that school went to court, and they confirmed that Tinubu was admitted, attended, and graduated from that school. That is enough,” Omokri said.
