Olympics: Nigeria’s Enekwechi reacts to shot put final loss
Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has reacted after missing the opportunity to win a medal in the men’s shot put final at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Thursday.
WuzupNigeria reported that Enekwechi who made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Nigerian to qualify for the final of the shot put event.
Recall that barely 24 hours before the final, Enekwechi was seen in a viral video washing the jersey for his shot put final, leaving many Nigerians disappointed with the athletics federation.
The caption in the video indicated that the athlete was given one jersey for the competition. “When you made the Olympic Finals, but you only have one jersey,” he wrote.
However, Enekwechi’s attempt to win a medal in his maiden appearance in the final ended with a 12th place finish as he fouled on his first attempt, threw a distance of 18.87m on his second before throwing 19.74m on his third attempt to finish 12th.
Despite the defeat, the 28-year-old admitted that he could have done better in the final but remained positive as he looks forward to being training for upcoming events and hopefully, the 2024 Olympics in France.
“12th place at the #Olympic Games. I’m okay with it because this has been a very trying couple of weeks.
“I’m happy to have made the Olympic Games but I know there are some things I could have done to make the story end a little bit sweeter. I picked a bad day to have a bad day.
“This is the first time I had literally thousands of people behind me watching me compete. With new levels come new devils.
“As overwhelming as it’s been the past couple of months, I do appreciate the love and support. I still have a few days left in Japan to do some shopping and decompress a bit before I go back home to figure out next year’s living and training situations. Yep, there’s a next year. Stay tuned,” Enekwechi wrote on Instagram.
