Olympics: Blow for Nigeria as Adegoke suffers injury in 100m final
Enoch Olaoluwa Adegoke suffered an injury in the Men’s 100m final, dashing Nigeria’s hopes of her first medal at the ongoing 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 21-year-old had a good start in the final after accelerating to 38.1km/h but he pulled out of the race halfway, making him unable to finish the race.
Italy’s Marcell Jacobs crossed the line first to win gold, followed by Fred Kerley of the United States while Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished third (a bronze medallist at the 2016 Rio Games) with a race time of 9.80, 9.84 and 9.89 respectively.
Africa’s second representative, Akani Simbine finished the race in fourth place at 9.96 while Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes was disqualified from a false start at the beginning of the race.
Meanwhile, Adegoke broke Nigeria’s 25-year athletics record at the Olympics by becoming the first 100m Olympic finalist since 1996 clocking 10.00s in heat 2 of men’s 100m semis, a record set by Davidson Ezinwa.
