Olympics: Nigeria drops four places to 68 despite winning bronze, silver medals

Despite winning bronze and silver medals on Tuesday, Team Nigeria has dropped four places from 64th position to 68th on the medals table at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan.

WuzupNigeria reported that Ese Brume bagged the bronze, Nigeria’s first medal, in the Women’s long jump event while Blessing Oborududu followed up with a silver medal in the Women’s freestyle 68kg Wrestling event.

Oborududu’s silver was Nigeria’s first-ever medal in the wrestling sport since the country first appeared at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games in Finland.

Nigeria’s hope for more medals was dashed on Wednesday after three losses in the Wrestling and Canoeing events as the Tokyo Games entered Day 12.

Medal hopeful, Odunayo Adekuoroye, who was 8-2 up in her 57kg weight category wrestling fight suffered a shocking defeat after Moldova’s Anastasia Nichita secured a pin on the Nigerian.

Also, wrestler Ekerekeme Agiomor was defeated by India’s Deepak Punia who won via technical superiority in the quarterfinals of the Men’s freestyle 86kg.

Subsequently, Ayomide Emmanuel Bello narrowly missed the semifinals of the Women’s Canoe Single 200m after coming third in the event.

As the Games enter day 13, Nigeria’s hope for another medal lies on the shoulders of Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who would attempt to get on the medal podium when he competes in the Shot Put final on Thursday.

China retains their lead on the medals table with 32 gold, followed by the United States, 25; Japan, 21; and Great Britain 15.

Kenya who ranks 38 with five medals is first for Africa, followed by South Africa on 39 with three medals and Ethiopia and Uganda tie of 45 with three medals apiece.

Tunisia is 48 on the table with two medals, Morocco 57 with only a gold medal, Mongolia 65 with three medals, while Namibia, Egypt and Ghana occupy 71, 76 and 79 positions.
