The Ogun State government has suspended a teacher from Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi, Ogun State after the teacher allegedly flogged and punished a student, Monday Arijo, which reportedly led to the boy’s death.
The incident happened on Friday, prompting immediate action from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.
Following the incident, the school principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, was questioned by the ministry. According to an official statement, the principal was given 24 hours to explain why she allowed corporal punishment in the school, which goes against state regulations. The government is considering disciplinary action against her for not following the rules set by state authorities.
A letter of condolence from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry was also sent to Arijo’s family. In the letter, the ministry described him as “an exceptional pupil” who would be deeply missed by his classmates, the school, and the state. The letter expressed sympathy for the family, wishing them the strength to cope with this tragic loss.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Ogun State, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest of the teacher stating, “The teacher has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing. The public will be informed about what truly happened because different versions of the incident are spreading online.”
The Ogun State government has promised to seek justice for Arijo’s family as the investigation unfolds.
