Ogun LG chairman impeached after accusing Dapo Abiodun of fund diversion

Wale Adedayo, the embattled Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area in Ogun State, has been impeached by five out of the 11 Councillors in the LGA.

This move comes after Adedayo accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of diverting statutory Federal allocations meant for all 20 LGs in the state, leading to his suspension and a probe by the Department of State Security.

Adedayo’s impeachment was announced shortly after he appeared before the Legislative Council at the Secretariat in Ogbere.

Fasheyi Akindele, the leader of Ijebu East Legislative Council, stated that Adedayo admitted to diverting Federal allocations sent to the Council and using them for purposes not approved by the State Government.

Akindele explained, “Adedayo also agreed that he spent the Council funds till August 2023, even when the budget was yet to be approved, whereas the laws only allow him to spend till March 2023.”

Adedayo also acknowledged misusing N5.2 million meant for 290 chairs and tables by producing only 20 pieces.

Furthermore, the impeached Chairman admitted to levying illegal fees on commercial transport operators, thinking it had been approved by the House.

However, Akindele clarified that such a bill, if passed, should have been jointly signed by the Leader of the House and the Council Chairman.

After approximately three hours of deliberation, the impeachment motion was put to a vote, with five councillors voting for Adedayo’s impeachment, four against, and one abstention.

Despite the impeachment, Adedayo asserted that he did not confess to any wrongdoing.

Adedayo maintained that his actions were in the interest of the people of Ijebu East Local Government, and he believed the court would have the final say in the matter.
