The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party, dismissing speculation about his alleged defection to the African Democratic Congress amid ongoing opposition coalition talks.

Obi addressed the issue during the official flag-off of the Labour Party’s campaign for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election.

The campaign event, held in the state, showcased the party’s candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, and his running mate, Lady Ifeoma Okaro.

While speaking to supporters, Obi clarified that although he and other opposition leaders, including Labour Party lawmakers, are involved in a broader coalition initiative ahead of the 2027 general elections, he remains a dedicated member of the LP.

“I will start this conversation by clarifying some confusions making the rounds,” he said. “Let me put it categorically clear: I, along with National Assembly members of the Labour Party, are part of the coalition that has adopted the ADC platform for the 2027 elections. However, as of today, I remain a member of the Labour Party.”

He continued, “If anyone asks you what party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell them I am in the Labour Party. If they ask about the coalition, let them know it is a strategic alliance for 2027.”

Obi also used the platform to officially announce his intention to contest the presidency again in 2027. He expressed strong belief in his ability to lead effectively.

“Everyone has the right to run for president. I won’t stop anyone. But if anyone asks, let them know that I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he asserted.

Dr. George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s flag bearer in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, also addressed the crowd, vowing to steer the state with dedication, faith, and a commitment to inclusiveness.
