Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed strong concerns about the current administration led by Bola Tinubu, citing ongoing security challenges across the country.
He described the rising incidents of killings and kidnappings in several regions as deeply troubling.
Speaking during an interview with News Central Television, Obasanjo emphasized that safeguarding citizens’ lives and property is a fundamental duty of any government. He warned that failure in this regard undermines the legitimacy of those in power.
Obasanjo said, “Let me tell you, the government that cannot give security of life and property of its citizens has no right of existence.”
The former leader also raised concerns about the legality of lawmakers determining their own salaries and benefits. He questioned the constitutional basis for such actions, insisting that members of the National Assembly are not empowered to fix their own remuneration.
“The elected members of our National Assembly have no right to fix their own salary and their own emoluments.
“It’s not in our constitution for them to do that. It’s the revenue mobilisation and allocation commission that should do it,” Obasanjo stated.
Earlier in February, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) announced that it had finalized a revised salary structure for political office holders. The commission added that the proposal had been submitted to the President via the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for consideration and approval.
