NSCDC official, nine others killed in Sokoto palliative stampede

Ten individuals, including a volunteer from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, lost their lives during a stampede while attempting to collect food items in Sokoto.

A volunteer operative with the NSCDC, Fatima Bala, was among those who tragically lost their lives during the stampede at the Gawon Nama residence of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, a former governor of the state.

The stampede occurred during a sallah palliative distribution event, where food items were being distributed to the public.

Despite the incident taking place on Thursday night, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the NSCDC has confirmed or denied the incident.

Expressing concern over the silence surrounding the incident, the Peoples Democratic Party has called for an immediate investigation.

“We wish to express deep sadness over the incident and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the no fewer than 10 people who passed away, while praying for the recovery of victims who sustained injuries at the scene of the regrettable occurrence,” stated Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the publicity secretary of the PDP in Sokoto State.

The PDP has urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens during such distributions.
